Winter Memories

Winter Memories was, shockingly enough, composed in the late summer of 2019. It began as a way to test the limits of the classical ensemble of the piano trio (typically a violin, cello, and piano). While the piece is fairly straightforward in its form (Rondo), the harmonic progressions are anything but classical. The piece is constantly meandering through different keys with the use pivot chords, very rarely staying on the same tonal center for longer than a few bars.

The piece represents three distinct aspects associated with winter. The beauty of fresh snowfall, the warmth and comfort of the fireplace (or whole-home furnace, in today’s standard), and the dark and sometimes destructive nature of winter storms. Each section is given its own distinct thematic material and motives to work with, which then return regularly throughout the piece.
