Whirlwind

Originally commissioned by Helen Kanaitis for her Senior Capstone Recital at Westminster College, Whirlwind is the culmination of a brief conversation with my undergraduate composition teacher, Dan Perttu. He said “Your pieces are very expressive and show a range of different emotions. Why have you not written something that sounds angry?”. From there, Whirlwind slowly took shape, with an introduction that exudes my interpretation of anger, paired neatly with an exciting, march-like section in 6/8. The piece features a cadenza that gives the horn player a chance to show off their abilities and musicality. With flashy piano runs, extended techniques for the horn, and both technical and musical challenges, Whirlwind is surely the piece you want to program for your next recital!
