Trichotomy

Trichotomy is written in three movements for horn quartet. The word “trichotomy”, like it’s counterpart “dichotomy”, is a set of three semi-unrelated things. In the Christian religion, the idea of dichotomy vs. trichotomy involves whether humankind is made up of just two parts, the mind and body, or if that should also include a third part: spirit.

The first movement opens with a ballad, which is then juxtaposed by a march-style section in 6/8. The second movement uses free atonality to express a sense of confusion or being lost in thought. The final movement is a lively dance, which brings back the theme from movement one to tie the pieces together.

Originally written for and premiered by the 2018 Westminster College Horn Ensemble, under the direction of Ms. Heather Johnson.
