Frosted Pains

Commissioned in 2021 by my fellow friend and musician, Nick Laugen, Frosted Pains aims to evoke strong emotions of pain, sorrow, and loss. The title is a play on words with the idea of frosted window panes, but spelled to incorporate a more on-the-nose description.

Frosted Pains uses the style markings in a creative way, stating the phrase “As if screaming into the void could save you from the cold, harsh darkness”. This phrase is split up into four separate sections through the piece. The beginning and end, using “As if…” and “…could save you…” are similar, but with the second half being higher pitched, giving off a chilly, icy feeling. The middle section, “…screaming into the void…” is exactly as it sounds: loud, heavy, and exasperated. The last chord lands on “…from the cold, harsh darkness.”
